Defeat of the Burton Amendment:
Another triumph for India

House of Representatives
August 02, 1999

The proceedings in the House of Representatives on the Burton Amendment make interesting reading. Twenty-one representatives spoke in favor of India. Only three, including Rep. Burton, spoke against India, before the Amendment was withdrawn.

The twenty-one Representatives who spoke in support of India are: Ackerman (NY), Andrews (NJ), Bereuter (NE), Berman (CA), Brown (OH), Callahan (AL), Clayton (NC), Davis (IL), Gilman (NY), Hastings (FL), Holt (NJ), Jackson-Lee (TX), Knollenberg (MI), Maloney (NY), McCollum (FL), Pallone (NJ), Pelosi (CA), Price (NC), Sherman (CA), Stearns (FL), Wexler (FL).

Apart from Burton (IN), the two who spoke against India were: Owens (NY) and Rohrabacher (CA). However, even Rohrabacher and Owens had something good to say about Indian democracy.
