Ros-Lehtinen Resolution on Mahatma Gandhi Expected to Pass House

Press Release
October 14, 2009

(WASHINGTON) - U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Ranking Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, commented today on the life and legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, the 140th anniversary of whose birth was recognized in legislation authored by Ros-Lehtinen and expected to pass the House today. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

“I am very pleased that the House will take a moment today to recognize the invaluable contributions of Mahatma Gandhi, who dedicated his life to helping those struggling to breathe free.

“Gandhi also played an instrumental role in laying the groundwork for democracy to flourish in India, which is now the world’s largest democracy and one of our strongest allies.

“It is my hope that Gandhi’s unbending commitment to freedom will continue to inspire our leaders today, and that the timeless and unalienable ideals for which he struggled will never be bartered or forgotten.”
