Usually has overall responsibility for evaluating political results of legislative proposals and constituent requests. Generally in charge of office operations including supervision of key staff. Appointment Secretary (Appt. Secy.) - Responsible for allocating the member's time. May also make travel arrangements and set speaking dates or visits to district, etc. Caseworker - Usually assigned to assist with constituent requests by preparing replies for the member's signature. May also help resolve constituent problems related to federal agencies, e.g., Social Security, Medicare, passports, veteran's benefits, etc. Chief of Staff (CoS) - See Administrative Assistant. Communications Director (Comm. Dir.) - See Press Secretary. Legislative Assistant (LA) - Makes recommendations regarding specific issues. Some congressional offices have several LAs with expertise in specific areas including foreign policy. Legislative Coordinator (LC) - Legislative Director (LD) - Usually monitors the legislative schedule and makes recommendations regarding particular issues. Personal Secretary - Press Secretary (Press Secy.) - Builds and maintains open lines of communication between the member, his/her constituency and the general public. Prepares and presents the member's views on specific issues to the media. Scheduler (Sch) - See Appointment Secretary. Senior Legislative Assistant (Sr. LA) - Responsible for overseeing assignments to Legislative Assistants. See Legislative Director. |
